I visited Bagenal's Castle to obtain more information on Robert Ross.
In 2008 the monument was restored by the current owners and Newry and Mourne District Council. It is positioned in almost the exact spot where General Robert Ross had planned to build his retirement home had he returned safely from his expedition to America in 1814. Major General Ross was born in Rostrevor, graduated from Trinity College Dublin at the age of 19 and joined the British Army. He steadily rose through he ranks seeing action in Spain, Egypt, Italy and the Netherlands.
